Summer flowers, appear in early- to mid-summer, are the classic bell-shaped blooms of this genus, but elongated and ranging from deep to pale pink; tart and tasty blue berries follow in late summer. Medium-green leaves put on orangish fall color, before dropping leaves to reveal pinkish winter twigs.
Dwarf bilberry is a native huckleberry across large parts of northern North America. In our region, they are found intermittently in the lowlands and more abundantly at higher elevations. Ours are from Thurston County stock, and we’ve grown them for a few years to reach a robust size for this plant in a pot.
Though the flowers are small, they support native bumblebees, cavity-nesting bees, and butterflies.
