Sweetbox is beloved for its sweet fragrance in late winter and very early spring, and its capacity to thrive in the deepest shade. This is the most compact species of Sweetbox, typically growing only ~18 in. high, but spreading out up to 3 or more ft wide over many years. Its low-growing habit makes it a wonderful evergreen ground cover when mass planted, or it can be featured along a pathway or the front of a shady garden bed, mixed with various ferns, and the many shade-loving native perennials and evergreen water-wise perennials such as Hellebores and Epimedium.
The mass of delicate white flowers appear in late winter, contrasting with the shiny dark-green narrow foliage. Small black fruits follow the blooms, developing in early summer.
Best in deep to partial shade, and completely drought tolerant, disease resistant, and not typically munched by deer or bunnies.
