Mexican Orange is an attractive, midsized, broadleaf evergreen shrub with fragrant orange blossoms and glossy leaves that emit a citrus fragrance when brushed against or lightly crushed.
This shrub grows 5 to 8 feet tall and wide, and has a natural, but mounded form with dense branching and foliage that is often shaped into a hedge, as it’s a great privacy screen. It’s also terrific left in a more natural shape to break up long fencelines, used in foundation plantings to mask utilities/unattractive spots, or as a standalone shrub in perennial borders.
The lustrous foliage is a lovely foil to the fragrant showy white blooms. Flowering begins in late spring, with scattered additional blooms in late summer and into fall. The flowers are full of nectar, attracting many pollinators, including various bees, butterflies, and generalists.
Mexican Orange grows best in full sun to part shade. It will grow in most soil types, but does require good drainage in our wet region. The citrus-scented evergreen foliage tends to be resistant to deer and rabbits.
