Scutellaria 'Dark Violet' (Dark Violet Skullcap) (1 quart)
‘Dark Violet’ Scutellaria is a charming, low-growing perennial that packs a powerful punch with its summer-long bloom period and resilience to heat and drought. Its small, snapdragon-like dark-purple flowers are held on small stalks atop small velvety grey-green foliage, and keep producing pollinator-loving blooms all summer and into fall! Though each individual flower is on the small side, the effect of them massing is powerful.
‘Dark Violet’ skullcap has a tidy form that grows only 6-8 in. tall x 10-15 in. wide. The foliage is semi-evergreen in our region, with at least some leaves remaining over winter. This plant is perfect for those hot microclimates with reflected heat, where you also want a low-growing plant, such as adjacent to walkways, patios, sidewalks, and driveways. But it’s so lovely, you’ll also want it at the front of a sunny perennial border, complementing other sunny perennials like Hummingbird-mints (Agastache), Geum, Columbine, Showy fleabane (Erigeron), Yarrow (Achillea), and dwarf ornamental grasses (Miscanthus and Pennisetum).
Plant in full to mostly full sun, in lean, well-drained soils. Water deeply and intermittently during establishment, backing off on the water as it matures; it should be drought tolerant once established. It will bring on loads of hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees during its long bloom period, while resisting nibbling from bunnies.
[Note: If purchasing these in our fall sale, they may have been cut back for winter.]
