Rhododendron macrophyllum (Pacific Rhododendrum) (1 gal - 6-10" tall)

Our native broad-leaved evergreen Pacific Rhododendron (and state flower!) is a rare find in nurseries. Our distinctive native rhodie is best suited for a PNW naturalistic landscape, where it can grow to fit the landscape it’s placed in, just as it does in its native habitat.

Unlike cultivated rhodies, our native species will ultimately grow into a large shrub with an open form, sometimes almost as a multi-trunked open shrub-tree. In more crowded spaces, it may only reach 6-12 feet, but given some space, it can double that size.

If you plant it in a setting that mimics its natural habitat, as an understory species where it can thrive in shade or the partial/filtered light offered along woodland garden edges that are still protected from the hottest sun. Pacific Rhododendron is naturally adapted to our dry summers. Irrigate deeply and infrequently for a few seasons to establish these plants, then pull back and eventually cease supplemental irrigation.

The flowers of our native Pacific Rhododendron are spectacular in a woodland setting, where the abundant clusters of large rosy-pink flowers add big spots of color — especially stunning when several mature native rhodies are scattered in a shady landscape.

Note: This is a slow-growing plant! We’ve been growing ours for several years, and they are still small on top, but very eager to get into the ground where they can put down roots and push out top growth in the right landscape setting!
