Lupinus polyphyllus (Bigleaf Lupine) (4 inch)
Native Large-leaved lupine offers a lot to a sunny landscape: the late spring/early summer blooms are enormous (12 in. or more!) spikes that feed a lot of hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and more; lupines fix nitrogen in the soil; the foliage hosts native butterfly and moth larvae; their deep root system binds soil layers, helping prevent soil erosion; and they are drought tolerant once established!
When mature, this lupine grows up to 3-4 ft. tall and wide, in a sunny to partly sunny location. This lupine species is adapted to a wide range of habitats and soils, including occurring in moist soils — meaning you can use this in seasonally wet places where our prairie-inhabiting lupines wouldn’t thrive. To ensure drought tolerance, during establishment water deeply and infrequently to encourage a healthy root system that will be resilient in the future.
Note: If purchasing these in our fall sale, they will likely be sheared back for winter, but will emerge robustly in spring!
