Abelia x grandiflora 'Kaleidoscope' ('Kaleidoscope' Variegated Abelia)
‘Kaleidoscope’ abelia is a semi-evergreen shrub with leaves that offer a range of color changes from spring through fall, starting with golden leaf margins that intensify as the season progresses into shades of red, orange, yellow and green. Although the stunning foliage is its main attraction, ‘Kaleidoscope’ also produces an abundant display of tubular white flowers that support hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees through a long bloom into fall.
‘Kaleidoscope’ is a dwarf shrub, only growing about 30-36 in. tall x 36-48 in. wide over many years. This makes it especially useful in mixed shrub-perennial borders, where it can be a focal point or a companion to other plants with contrasting or complementary foliage and flowers, or used in repetition as a highlight.
This abelia grows in full sun to part shade and does well with a little relief from the hottest mid-day sun. It’s adapted to many soils as long as they have reasonable drainage, and benefits from compost-amended soils. Once established with deep, infrequent watering, ‘Kaleidoscope’ abelia will be drought-tolerant.
