Loved for its utility as well as its beauty and heavenly springtime vanilla fragrance, this is a tried-and-true drought-tolerant, broad-leafed, evergreen shrub for our region. Use it solo as a statement shrub, or in a mixed-species hedgerow, or with other Osmanthus to create an evergreen screen. The flowers appear in late March through April and produce masses of fragrant, white tubular flowers, great for the early-season pollinators. Small blue-black fruits follow the flowers. The leaves are small, glossy dark-green, with a delicately toothed margin.
This Osmanthus is slightly more compact and more shade-tolerant than Osmanthus x burkwoodii: It ultimately grows about 5-8 ft. high and wide with a lovely open form and arching branches; or shear it regularly to produce denser “hedge” growth.
Grow this in full sun to shade, and in all types of soil. Deer resistant, and great for pollinators!
