Gaultheria shallon (Salal)

Out of Stock

Salal is a year-round treasure, with color and texture in every season. This classic evergreen native shrub works well as a shrubby groundcover in shady and semi-shady spots. The leathery, elliptical leaves provide attractive foliage and are often used as greens in flower arrangements.

In spring-early summer, a cascade of small pinkish-white bell-shaped flowers feed birds and beneficial insects in late spring to mid-summer, and the blue-black fruits (relative of blueberries) are enjoyed equally by wildlife and people (enjoy as you would blueberries)!

Salal grows from 2-7 ft. tall, growing the tallest in full shade (best in part to full shade). It typically stays around 2-3 ft. in home landscapes, and can be sheared back to keep it in check if desired.

It grows in any well draining soil and is drought tolerant when planted in shady spots.
