A very special and hard-to-find perennial native to our prairies, oak woodlands, and marine bluffs!
Chocolate Lily features charming nodding, bell-shaped checkered purple-brownish flowers, spotted with green and yellow. Flowers are borne singly or in clusters on a tall stalk, ranging from 1-3 ft. or more at maturity, and spreading out to ~8 in. wide.
Chocolate Lily is important for many butterfly and moth species, both as a nectar source and larval host.
Chocolate Lily does well in full sun to part shade, a variety of soils, and is drought-tolerant once established. Pair it with later-blooming perennials that enjoy similar sun conditions and will fill out the space once this slips into summer dormancy.
One of our most-prized low-maintenance native ephemeral perennials!
