A hard-to-find and very dramatic, low-growing plant with jet-black (with deep purple highlights), evergreen, grass-like foliage. Best planted in mass (it spreads lightly over time) for impact, and inter-planted with contrasting forms and colors. Contrasts especially well with native bleeding hearts or brightly colored sedums, saxifrages and Heucheras, or other plants with light foliage & bright flowers as a ground cover, edging or in containers. The ''grass''-like leaves may be up to 6" long, but they are relatively prostrate so the effect is not more than a few inches high.
Originally from parts of Asia, it is well adapted to our climate and prefers rich, well-drained soil, in full sun to shade; will need richer soils or more water to establish if in a hot spot. Drought-tolerant once established. Blooms with lavender flowers in summer, then produces dark purple berries in the fall. Deer-resistant.
