Cornus mas (Cornelian-cherry Dogwood)

A lovely small (12-25 ft. tall) deciduous tree or large shrub, Cornus mas is highly ornamental and adaptable, providing multiple seasons of color and texture.

In late winter to early spring, yellow flowers emerge in rounded clusters of small, fragrant, star-shaped blossoms. In midsummer, enjoy showy clusters of glossy, cherry-red fruits: striking and edible for humans and wildlife!

In addition to its petite height, it has a full, bushy form (12-15 ft. wide at maturity), filled with dark-green leaves that turn purple in autumn.

Site in full sun to partial shade, in most soils with decent drainage. This is a generally easy-care plant, with no propensity for pests or diseases, and with adequate deer resistance. Incorporate it into a hedgerow or privacy screen, in a mixed-species cottage garden, or as a stand-alone specimen tree.
