An upright, deciduous shrub with 4" fragrant flower clusters and red stems at maturity. Grows 3-10' H and 10' W in moist to dry soils in forest openings and on rocky ledges in the West. Prefers sun but will tolerate part shade. Known as a versatile wildlife plant for deer, birds, butterflies and native bees. Makes an excellent plant for restoration projects since it fixes nitrogen in the soil. Hardy in Zones 6-10. Native from B.C. to Northern CA and east to CO.
