Asarum caudatum (Wild Ginger)

$0.00

Sun: Light: Open to deep shade
Water: Moist
Size: 6” tall, 12” wide, spreading

Native Wild Ginger is one of the most sought-after shade-garden perennials! Loved for its striking deep-green, leathery, heart-shaped leaves and unique maroon flowers, as well as its fully evergreen coverage for winter presence.

Wild Ginger creates small masses that blend well with other native perennials and ferns. Our pots are brimming with a dense, robust cluster ready to spread out in your shady spot! Pair it with other shade-loving woodland perennials, such as Vanilla-leaf (Achlys), False lily-of-the-valley (Maianthemum dilatatum) or Star-flowered false-Solomon"s seal (Maianthemum stellatum).

Shade is a must, but it will grow in dry or moist soils, ideally amended with compost or naturally humus-rich. Great Plant Picks says, "This is one of the few wild gingers that have a fair degree of slug resistance." Completely drought tolerant once it's established; might appreciate a little summer watering now and then, especially in fast-draining soils.

Its name derives from the leaves releasing a spicy, ginger-and-citrus fragrance when crushed.
