Achlys triphylla (Vanilla leaf)

$0.00

A PNW native herbaceous perennial that spreads lightly by rhizome to make an ephemeral carpet best mixed with other woodland perennials and delicate ferns, such as Deer Fern & Lady Fern (see photos).

Vanilla leaf is known for the vanilla scent of its dried leaves and for its 3 leaflets with scalloped edges.  From March to June, it blooms with white flower spikes 1-3" long at the center point of the leaflets.

Grows best in part shade to shade in soils with high organic matter.  In the wild, it typically grows with Bleeding Heart, Wild Ginger, Thimbleberry, Salmonberry, and the Maianthemum species.  While it prefers moist soil, it is drought tolerant once established.
