BioBlitzes

Next Bioblitz: April 16th

A BioBlitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time, getting a snapshot of an area’s biodiversity. High quality data uploaded to iNaturalist become part of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, an open source database used by scientists and policy makers around the world.

Each event has a Basecamp, where you can:

  • Learn how to use the iNaturalist app or website

  • See examples of what makes a good observation

  • View a live-updating project page of all our observations so far

  • and get answers any other questions you might have.

We encourage you to focus on good photos/observations while you’re in the field, but if you’re using a phone with internet/data service you can start uploading your observations as soon as you make them!

Volunteer identifiers and the iNaturalist community will start validating or correcting identifications in real time, until they’re “research grade”. For a BioBlitz, all observations from that location on that day are added to a single project, and we’ll report back with a summary of what we found that day, as well as any other learnings.
