The demonstration hedgerow at Helsing Junction Farms was installed in fall 2023 to enhance organic crop production through creating year-round habitat for pollinators and “natural pest enemies”; support healthy soil & reduce erosion though the creation of a windbreak in an extensive open field; sequester carbon; and filter/recharge groundwater.
Join us for an evening of discussion with the farm’s owners, our Thurston Conservation District colleagues, and the original hedgerow designers from our team to see first hand the beauty, successes, and challenges. We’ll dive into how the hedgerow’s initial design is expected to meet the farmers' goals as it matures; the budget/costs, required farmers' time, and grants that supported the initial installations; its irrigation system pros & cons; plant survival rates; and lessons learned so far on our very first demonstration hedgerow!
Details & directions will be emailed to all participants several days prior to the event, so please watch your inbox/spam for that email!
This hedgerow was installed through a partnership of Helsing Junction’s owners; Pierce Conservation District; Xerces Society; Thurston Conservation District; WSU Extension; Thurston County Water Resources; Western SARE; and Native Plant Salvage Foundation.
