Hedgerows Workshop Prep Work Party

We are gearing up to offer our sixth hands-on workshop with our ongoing educational partners, Thurston Conservation District, and our landowner demonstration-site partners, Summit Farms. In preparation, we will be offering a work party a few days before to complete tasks that will support our workshop. This is a great opportunity to learn more about our hedgerow installation processes and to get your hands a little dirty alongside like-minded volunteers.

What we will do:

  • Block out the planting areas into 5-foot sections, to enable easier placement of plants on November 7th, using pin flags, twine, and paint.

  • Put the 15 species in blocks according to the planting template, and place groups of about 50 plants along the planting area at 20-ft. Intervals.

  • Label plants for learning during the workshop.

  • There are tasks for people of all abilities!

This project is over 500 feet long and it will use native trees & shrubs to protect waterways and endangered species, while providing months of blooms, fruits, and cover for wildlife of all sizes. We’ll intersperse hands-on learning with helping bring this immense new planting to fruition!

Since the launch of our “Hedgerows Toolkit” in 2023, we’ve partnered with local farmers, Thurston Conservation District, and many other regional and federal funders to implement various demonstration hedgerows combined with learning opportunities for community members, regardless of their interest in the power of hedgerows to solve a lot of big problems in a comparatively small space!

This is a joint project of Summit Farms, Thurston Conservation District, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, WSU Extension, & Native Plant Salvage Foundation, implemented with funding provided by Thurston County Community Planning, NRCS, and Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education.
